A Growth Group is a group (in a home or at Hillside) made up of 8-16 people who meet weekly or bi-weekly to share, study and support one another. A trained leader and host lead each group. An average meeting lasts for an hour and a half, followed by light refreshments.

Each Fall Season for several years, Hillside has experienced a series that brings the whole church together. After Summer, people return to church refreshed and eager to make spiritual growth a focus.
Each person in the church, within their age-appropriate learning environments, will be focused on Prayer. An essential topic for every believer. We trust you and your family will join us for this series.
How does it work?
We have a very easy way for you to remember. Think of a meal with an appetizer, main course & dessert. Not many want to miss any part of that full meal. During this fall season consider our Weekend Service as the appetizer. Our teaching pastors will introduce the topic and share in an engaging way an insight on Prayer. If you are unable to attend on a certain weekend you can conveniently catch the sermon/teaching on our website www.hillsidemoncton.org Then the main course is for the following week for you to put into practice what you have heard, to practice prayer and read the portions of scripture taught. There will be an accompanying journal available to keep you on track with a weekly application. The dessert is being part of a growth group.
What is a Growth Group?
A Growth Group is a fellowship (in a home or at Hillside) made up of 8-16 people who meet weekly or bi-weekly to share, study and support one another. A trained leader and host lead each group. An average meeting lasts for an hour and a half, followed by light refreshments.
How long is this series?
Here at Hillside, we flow with the seasons. Therefore, this alignment series includes 6 Growth Group meetings. Your group will define exactly when the group will meet and whether you will be a weekly group or a bi-weekly group. Regardless, the series will begin in September and end in November.
How important are Growth Groups?
Growth Groups are the backbone of our ministry here at Hillside. They’re the place where people are encouraged to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ as we study God’s Word while supporting and sharing our lives with one another. We believe that meeting together on a regular basis is time well spent. Our goal each year is to have at least 70% of our adults involved in a group. For us this fall, this means 40+ adult groups.
I attend church on weekends, isn’t that good enough?
Here are some benefits of Growth Groups:
- Life change happens best in groups. Life change happens best in circles, not rows.
- Groups make churches personal. The desire to find a few good friends is on the rise, and loneliness is increasing in our culture.
- Groups provide a place for new leaders to lead. Many leaders are sitting at Hillside underutilized & under-challenged. Here is an opportunity to step up.
- Groups provide the best opportunity for one-another.
- Groups provide a sense of family for many whose family is broken or biological family may live far away.
- Groups provide a safe place for questions. Spiritual growth does not happen in one-way communication.
- You are cared for more effectively in a group. Many have experienced this genuine care from their group during difficult times.
Am I locked into one group forever?
We’ve been doing growth groups for many years. At the end of each season, you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break. Some groups have been together for quite a while, other groups only do church-wide initiatives in the fall. New groups are formed each fall as we have newer people coming to Hillside all the time. Growth Groups do not typically meet in December, June, July, August.
What about child care?
Growth Groups are for adults only. Exceptions can be made for nursing newborns. We leave it up to each family to work out their own child care. Sometimes it works best for families to share a sitter, other groups have a sitter (or 2) come over and occupy the children in the basement or another spot in the house or others swap childcare with another family whose Growth Group meets on a different evening. Some parents view growth group as a date night to focus on their spiritual growth as a couple.
Growth Group Facilitator Training?
We have been blessed to have dozens of people step up and facilitate groups over the years. Our Church continues to grow. Many attendees have never been part of a group before for a church-wide initiative such as 40 Days of Prayer. If interested in hearing more about facilitating/hosting a Growth Group for Fall 2018 would you make plans to join Pastor Dave on one of three training times:
Tuesday, Aug 28th @7pm, Wednesday, Aug 29th @ 7 pm, or Sunday, Sept 2nd @ 12:45 pm
Each session will only be 1 hour.
*Note: It is a requirement to attend a training session to lead a Hillside Growth Group, it is always wise to ensure we are all on the same page with expectations. We view Group leaders as an extension of our staff and lead teams. What a joy to have a front row seat as we see God at work in lives all around us.
Let us know what training time you will be attending by sending an email to email@example.com
How do I choose a group?
When selecting a group, we recommend you choose a group based on its leader/host team and phase-of-life. Over the years, we’ve found that groups do best when members share a common phase-of-life and other interests with their leaders/hosts and other group members. Location/convenience/drive time should all be secondary reasons.
Phase-of-life examples: Young Adults (18-29), Young Marrieds, Young Families, Parents of Children K-6, Parents of Teens, Empty Nest, Senior Adults. We are a Multi-generational church and for some groups, a mixing of all ages is a really fun aspect of the group. Remember, these phase-of-life groupings are intentionally kept fuzzy and are meant to help you self-select an appropriate group for you. They are not intended to box you in.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the church, and Penny Mollins or Pastor Dave Steeves we will gladly assist you. Keep in mind that it might take two or three groups before you find the perfect fit, but don’t worry, you’ll find it!
Group sign up will begin the week of September 3rd @ www.hillsidemoncton.org
Are there Growth Groups for my children and teenagers?
Yes, our weekend Children’s Ministry is called KidZone (K-Gr.3) and our Pre-Teen Ministry is called Launch (Gr.4-5). There are groups or table groups in each of those environments hosted by consistent leaders and helpers. Contact Laura Harris firstname.lastname@example.org
